ServiceNow upgrades are one of the highest-risk activities in platform administration. When managed well, they unlock new capabilities, security patches, and performance improvements. Here are the practices that consistently lead to successful outcomes.
1. Start with a thorough pre-upgrade assessment
Before a single line of remediation work begins, you need a clear picture of what you are working with. This means auditing all customizations, scoped applications, integrations, and any usage of deprecated APIs flagged by the Upgrade Center. Review every skipped change carefully.
2. Use a proper clone strategy
Never run your first upgrade on production. Clone production to sub-production, run the upgrade on the clone, remediate all issues, re-clone and validate, then schedule the production upgrade.
3. Remediate before upgrading, not after
Address all known skipped changes and deprecated API usage before executing the upgrade. This creates a clean baseline and makes post-upgrade validation far more reliable.
4. Plan your rollback before you start
ServiceNow upgrades cannot be undone once complete. Maintain a pre-upgrade clone as a reference environment and agree on a go/no-go decision point with clear criteria.
5. Test business processes, not just technical function
Build a regression test suite covering your highest-volume and highest-criticality workflows. Run these after every upgrade on the clone environment, and again after the production upgrade before handing back to users.
6. Communicate early and often
Give stakeholders adequate notice, set clear expectations about maintenance windows, and have a communication plan ready for the post-upgrade period.
